Introduction/ Background of Programme:
FDO is continuously making efforts to improve economic and social well beings through various interventions in the most vulnerable and marginalized communities. With the technical and financial support of Welthungerhilfe (WHH), FDO has started a new project in district Muzaffargarh to improve the status of nutrition and food security through LANN+ Approach. This multi-sectoral Linking Agriculture, Natural Resources and Nutrition (LANN+) approach is focusing on family nutrition and has a clear focus on integrating all sectoral elements which are nutrition-sensitive and address the actual causes of malnutrition to achieve nutrition security.
This project aims at improving the nutrition status of 2000 HHs in 2 union councils of District Muzaffargarh, Punjab namely Chak Farazi & Azizabad.
Through its different interventions project will improve the production and martyrs consumption of nutritious food, protect natural resources and indigenous plant species, increase income, and improve knowledge about nutrition, through the best environment and hygiene practices. The project will also promote the production and processing of nutrient-rich food by supporting climate-friendly, resource-efficient, and nutrition-sensitive agriculture. On the other hand, the project will contribute to increasing household income to ensure access to nutritious food in the markets, together with awareness-raising on nutrition and hygiene. In addition to these multi-sectoral activities in the communities to address the root causes of malnutrition, the project will engage different stakeholders (government, civil society, and community organizations) to address the root causes of malnutrition in the region and to ensure services that are important for people's food security in the long term. Learnings from previous projects and different evaluation studies show that not only different sectors but also different stakeholders need to come together to address the problems of malnutrition in a comprehensive and sustainable way.
Major sector wise interventions which program aims to strive to improve nutrition status of target communities are:
- Under the agriculture sector, we aim to provide 200 vegetable gardens, 40 wheat seed multiplication plots, 40 hermetic drums, 80 WSBs for food storage, plantation of 30,000 plants, 3 enough food models, 10 multi-component fodder, the establishment of 1 nursery with advanced technology, 500 acres land leveling, and treatment and introducing new technologies of organic farming to farmers.
- Under the livelihood sector, 40 persons will be provided with vocational training, and 2 groceries shops containing fortified food items will be established.
- Under the Livestock sector, traditional and non-traditional poultry farming will be introduced by directly involving 105 beneficiaries and artificial insemination of 600 animals to improve breeds of target villages.
- WASH sector is equally important and under this, we will form 40 children's clubs. They will be trained on health and hygiene and with peer influence, they will educate others. PLA approach will be used to aware target villages of the importance of nutrition and WASH. 80 hand washing facilities and latrines will be rehabilitated in target villages, 10 community-based WASH facilities will be rehabilitated and 40 communal hand pumps will be installed. The target community will be given awareness on water-borne diseases and etc.
- The nutrition sector will be the main focus of all interventions under other sectors. However, female groups will be given training on preparing nutritious foods, 20 HHs will be given Solar dryers and vegetable cutting/ peeling machines, raising awareness on “1000 day window of opportunity”.
